The Horror! Games that scare you silly, or did.

Yes! God I loved that level. I only wish that they had made the Cradle itself attack you instead of giving us zombies. Have old burnt pieces of wood hurled at us, or walls deliberately collapse on you if you wandered into a lighted area. Stuff like that.
I loved that! I loved the enormous edifice you got to wander around, even with all of its stupid locked doors. They put in some effort into the design and as a result it genuinely felt like a location with a lot of history. And admittedly the scares were mostly along the lines of "Christ, what weird demon-dealie is going to pop out at me now?" but in really worked for me in that game.
Also, to this day Undying is the only FPS to give me a melee weapon that I actually relished. That scythe was a joy to wield.
I should have also mentioned Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth back there in my first post. More atmospheric than scary, but I didn't mind. (I really wish they'd made it a straight-up adventure game instead of a weird adventure-combat-survival horror crossbreed. One of my favorite parts was simply wandering around the Boston home and then Innsmouth in the beginning) Lots of gameplay problems, which is a shame, because I really enjoyed the story's payoff and I wonder how many people will get to it instead of just giving up.

David-kyo: I’ve heard people mention Shadow of the Comet quite a lot when discussing horror gaming classics. Is it as good as they say? How does it compare to say, Darkseed?

Apart from that I'd say the Silent Hill games, I have only played the first one and I am half-way through the second but they are excellent games that give a genuine scare. Does anyone else think that the first Silent Hill is scarier than the second or am I crazy?

Being the sucker for links and free stuff I am, I now have this up, and am running it through DOS-box. However, I can't get the bloody thing started! I can get it here, but it always seems to have redirected to Hybrid.exe which doesn't allow me to move on to the actual game! I'm very annoyed, and would like some advice (beyond "use Wikipedia or Google"!).

Pace-wise I found it a lot better, and there's no time limit which is a definite plus. Also, hand drawn graphics > digitalized. Although sometimes the puzzles can get very obscure.
Check it out: http://abandonia.com...+the+Comet.html
Bugger, it's ESA protected now, but I think you can still get it here: http://www.the-under...ow+of+The+Comet

Zelda: the orcarnia (or however the hell you spell it) of time
It creeped me beyond by belief by travailing 10 years into the future with some creapy old dude from a butterfly paradise into a silent hill game (from the looks of it and have never played) to have the ex-local populis only to eat at me like dirty hermetic nerds eat McDonalds after flinging themselves at my back, raping me if I so much as looked at them! But then again I was only turning 8 at the time....

Project Firestart
Enclosure
Penumbra
Clock Tower: That spooky music, this is probably the scariest game I ever played.
Thief 1 and Half Life 2: Zombies, spiders, darkness and unusual weapons make a good mix.
Alone in the Dark: It was scarier back when I was a kid, I wish someone would make games like that with AGS.
Shadow of the Comet: Great story but the gameplay is flawed on so many level, I recommend it only for hardcore adventure gamers, because if you've only played the Chzo Mythos, you'll experience first hand illogical puzzles, gratuitous death sequences, pixel hunting, maze and clumsy controls all in the same game.

It's called I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream; and yes it is based on the book.
This one will mindfuck you until a mixture of blood and semen is dribbling out of both of your ears.
