I'm very proud to announce the birth of a new Star Wars-related documentary - The People vs. George Lucas - which I hope you’ll want to participate in, as it concerns every Star Wars fan out there.
Here’s the link to our website:
www.peoplevsgeorge.com
The People vs. George Lucas is not only the first truly democratic feature film in history; it’s also a unique opportunity for the millions of opinionated Star Wars supporters and detractors everywhere to speak up about the franchise and its creator, George Lucas.
Slated for release in 2009, The People vs. George Lucas is a new kind of Star Wars fan film, and we’d like to encourage you to participate in the making of this exciting new documentary. This film is about empowering the fans. It’s about telling George what we love and hate about Star Wars. It’s about expressing what this franchise means to us, what we wish had been handled differently, and what our hopes for the future are. Above all, it’s a celebration of what binds us, the fans, together.
So check out our site, spread the word, and send us your footage!
Cheers,
Alexandre O. Philippe

But then again, given that it's fans versus George Lucas, they could still probably do a better job. I'll stay on the fence for now. Oh, you should also stick around the forums and post a bit, because it's just bad form to create an account just to plug your website, though you get kudos for actually seeming like a real person and not a bot.

Thanks, Slade! I appreciate and understand your concerns, and I can assure you that our job while making this doc will be to act as mediators. There are, as you know, many contentious issues that SW fans feel passionate about and that we believe deserve to be debated in an open, fun-spirited way. In fact, our objective is to interview a number of celebrities as well, and we plan to give each side of the argument an equal amount of screen time. In short, this isn't about demonizing George. I love him as much as any fan. But there's been a lot of talk about the Special Editions, the new trilogy, the Midichlorians, etc... And these issues will be at the heart of our debate.
Finally, because our doc will be largely about, for and by the fans, this post isn't so much about plugging our film as it's about encouraging people like you to get involved. PvsG is a truly unique documentary in that sense, because we want to give every fan a voice. I hope this helps clarify a few things, and thanks again for your message!

All right, all right: Thank you! There.
Oh, and bring on the prosecution! The more heated the debate, the better the flick!

The book was interesting. Some good writers taking sides, but some essays were good; many pretty bad. They tried to have an interactive website associated with it to debate the ideas but it was also vandalized a lot. In this sense, the book was mastabatory.

What is it that you want specifically to achieve? We've seen that George is reticent in changing his views once established - having said that the sheer weight of demand did see the DVD release of the OT in it's original form. Personally I think this was still more a marketing tool than anything else, but hey. in this case the fans got what they wanted.
Are we looking for an apology, the remaking of the films, the making of more films????
Oh, yeah and quick question for Nick. Have you published the final versio of Shimmering Sword? I have the edition pre Revenge of the Sith so am curious if you have managed to add to this yet.

Thanks for posting, and I certainly understand your concern. In fact, that's something we put a lot of thought into prior to launching our site. It would probably be a disaster if we didn't have a dramatic structure in mind and included a bunch of random clips in the film. But we're going to have to be extremely selective, and there are a number of points we want to articulate, so every submission will be carefully filtered. While we want the process to be as democratic as possible (and the various points of view out there to be heard, as long as they're articulate), at the end of the day, we still have to make a film. In that sense, the final product will still be subjective. There's quite simply no way around that. But our intent is to treat the fans and their opinions with respect, and to give George a chance to explain himself. In other words: we're not interested in creating a Jerry Springer-type show for Star Wars fans. There are real and important issues that need to be explored, and we want to create a safe environment for fans to respectfully vent their opinions and ideas. In fact, we just started a blog at myspace.com/peoplevsgeorge, so you can participate there as well and give us your ideas. And the more people actively participate in the making of this film, the more likely we are to grab George's attention, so I urge you all to get involved and spread the word!

Let's face it, SW has had a huge cultural impact on common culture as well as the entertainment industry. But, as Bill Gates put it, the geeks have taken over the world. SW geeks are exactly the same as sports geeks, literature geeks, academics, etc. Listen to any Sunday news program and the talking heads come across as politics geeks. Listen to the play-by-play of a football game. They talk about their passions as fondly (and obsessively) as SW people.
Has anyone seen the Star Trek movie about fans (was it called Trekkies?)? It kind of comes off as if the people were a bit deraged because they seemed to live Star Trek. I don't think this movie would be as interesting. However, I do think the premise is very interesting if it comes off like the scene in the Kevin Smith's movie about the Death Star and whether the construction workers deserved to be killed when the DS II was destroyed. It would be amusing, entertaining, and informative.

You're absolutely right of course- your film is a film and as such needs a structure and plot and needs something to tie A to B to C.
You must realise then, that labelling your film a democratic enterprise is completely misleading. What you will end up doing is what any filmmaker would end up doing, find a structure then filter out the fans' voices to fit it.
Anyway, good luck with it. I had about as much SW discussion as I could manage in my 'prequel days' on this board so I don't feel up to commentating much myself, but I don't envy you having to wade through the inevitable "Jar Jar sux111" "Mace Windu was way cool!!" "Darth Maul would kick Vaders ass!" comments you're bound to get.
Oh, if you want an actual democratically made film, check out the 'I Shot That!' concert film the Beastie Boys put out, where they gave 50 people (I think it was 50) cameras and asked them to shoot the gig, then edited together the results. Of course, they didn't have to worry about a story or whatnot like you will, but still.
