Yeah, the hard drive is recognised, and Windows says it's "healthy".
But I'm starting to believe it's fucked.
I had a similar problem with an old graphics card which was, well, fucked.
Hard Drive...Issues Well, just the one - it doesn't work.

Well, thinking more about this : simply coping some data on a (bad?) HDD should not crash your sistem. It may get non-responsive for a while, it may give you some weird errors, at most you can get a blue screen, but not a restart. Do you get any errors logged into the Event Log? anything unusual ?
Anyway, if your computer acts normally without it: don't give it anymore thought! Declare it fucked and go to the shop for a replacement. I did this just last month and they exchanged it with a new one.

I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.

Go to Start=>Control Panel
Open System Properties.
When System Properties appears, click the Advanced tab.
Under Startup and Recovery click Settings.
Uncheck Automatically restart under System Failure.
Click OK.
See if that stops the rebooting problem.

Did you do the above? If so, are you still getting the reboot problem after changing these settings?

That is a point, does it have an unexpired warranty?
If you could take a picture of inside the case (showing the case from the outside) and post it here that might give us an indication of what we are looking so I can look up some information about the hardware.

Cheers for all the help guys, it's all been very useful. I'll be honest, the system I'm talking about is in my other house, so I've not had a chance to check. however, I should be there over the weekend, and I'll try all the ideas then.
I'd imagine it's warranty has expired, I've had it sat boxed up for a couple years.
