Lucas Returns to College

George Lucas chastised the nation's universities for not treating the study of film in the same way they do other academic disciplines such as law, medicine, journalism, and architecture. "It just isn't thought of in the same breath, which is for me a sacrilege," Lucas said at a groundbreaking ceremony at USC where a 137,000-square-foot complex is being constructed to house the university's film school -- a complex made possible by Lucas's $175-million gift to the university. Lucas, who produced his first films as an undergraduate of the university in the mid-'60s, said, "When I came here I didn't have a clue about how to make movies, anything -- I didn't even watch movies. I was a real novice." Today's (Thursday) Los Angeles Times said that Lucas is treating the new facility "much like one of his cinematic productions," working with Urban Design Group of Dallas on the design of the buildings -- even "on such minute aspects as the detailing on the archways."

To which, my only rebuttal can be:

Star Wars fans of the original trilofy chastised George Lucas for not treating the original trilogy in the same way he has anything else he has put out. "It just isn't thought of in the same breath, which is for us a sacrilege," fans said at a groundbreaking ceremony at Chefelf.com -- a complex made possible by Lucas's flagrant disregard for the original trilogy. Lucas, who produced his first films as an undergraduate of the university in the mid-'60s, said, "When we first saw the original Star Wars trilogy, we were transported into another world," Chef Elf said, speaking for a great many Star Wars fans. "We were then subjected, first to unacceptable, unnecessary and ridiculous CGI additions, then to the prequel trilogy, which has many fans wondering if Mr. Lucas is in DIRE need of psychiatric help and heavy medication."

Or he is in dire need of a "thank you" from several ungrateful fans.

I don't know how many times I have to say this, but without George Lucas there is NO Star Wars whatsoever. Maybe he didn't do a "perfect" job on 3.5 of the Star Wars films he created (Although I would say 4.5, since ANH licks sack), but what is the logic of focusing on the negatives? You should just be happy you liked a couple of the movies.

If a hockey goalie wins 72/73 games, do you praise him for winning 72 games or put him on trial for losing one game?

Well, agreed, except that the games are discrete events, not presented as parts of a series, your example suggests a much better success ratio than your statement of 4.5/6, and well, apples do make good cider, but pretty bad orange juice.

The irksome trait that has most Lucas bashers angry with him is not his failure to live up to the promise he hinted at with his earlier films. If Beethoven had made some catchy, poppy, but otherwise forgettable symphonies 10-13, folks wouldn't begrudge him anything. We all know that eventually folks lose their edge. With Lucas, the irksome things are his public statements both that he did NOT make the films up as he went along, and that those fans who don't like them "really just believe x," where X is generally something so insulting it defies citation. EG, that folks who think it makes more sense for Han Solo to shoot first "just like murderers, because they think in some infantile way that murderers are cool. But what they don't realize is that murderers can't be redeemed at the end of a film, as Han Solo was.*" <cough, cough, Darth Vader>

I'll add as an afterthought that it's also irksome that he claims that despite awesome and obvious connections, he based nothing on sci fi or fantasy, but actually was inspired by quite dissimilar classical mythology and drama. Doubly irksome that so many gushers buy it.

* more or less a true paraphrase of something Lucas actually said.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

Okay, and just to keep the ratio consistent, then Lucas would have met the fan's approval in 42% of his Star Wars movies. From an initial glance, that is pretty brutal....but have you actually gone out and seen any movies lately? The quality of movies these days sucks. The last few movies I have seen were:

1. Little Miss Sunshine (A good movie)
2. Snakes on a Plane (Terrible, but hilarious. Kind of like ROTS.)
3. Talledega Nights (Brutal. They tried way too hard to be funny, and it just wasn't)
4. Miami Vice (A crime against nature. Talk about the most one dimensional characters you will ever see in a movie.)
5. The Night Listener (A good movie, but too short)

I agree that focusing on the
negatives will only cause trouble.
But what i don't understand is
how something so beautiful ended horribly

it really makes no sense unless it was
some voodo curse. Cuz really nothing else works
I may just be trying to start a fight
or just being be annoying (as usual)

but if a goaltender even plays 73 games in a row
it is considered an accomplishment, let
alone playing 73 games and winning 72,
just in case you didn't know.

There's a lightside, a darkside

and it holds everything together
