So how would I go about starting one. Mostly I refer to webhosting and bandwidth issues. That and how the hell does domain names work?
PS: not really planning on starting a website NOW but I would like to keep it an option for the future of my nerding career.

Best bet:
Host with Chefelf. His rates are VERY reasonable, and some of the best I've come across. For a domain name, go with Godaddy. They've been nothing but good news for me. This is the setup that I have with Heccubus' Domain. Completely problem free. I don't think the site has gone down even once since I switced to a .com setup.

As for how domain names work... (not sure exactly how this'd work with Chefelf's hosting, but I imagine it ain't far off)
When you get your webspace, find out its DNS codes. You give these to your domain name, and it connects the two. Hopefully the rest is easy enough...

I'm starting my site on tripod, and eventually I plan to move it to become a part of the Lance and Eskimo empire, once it's worthy.

If you want to go with free hosting services, I reccommend 50megs.com. It's good for basic text/images only type stuff. Tripod was okay, but you get nothing for space, and their ads are incredibly invasive. The only real plus side was being able to work with pre-designed templates, however if you don't know HTML, I'd be glad to offer some help, as well.
