No one will probably even read this thread. oh well

most people know i dabble in guitar. I implement keyboard-like instruments into my 'songs', but i could hardly say i play one. yup.

So what instruments, if any, do you people play? What songs do you particularily like to jam on? ohmy.gif

My biggest regret in life was not learning an instrument at a young age. I blame my parents for not be strict enough sad.gif.

I love music and regard any professional musician a geneious.

I play the drums, dabble in keyboards, and make strange noises with guitars and varios electronic toy instruments, not to mention making electronic music. But electronic music doesn't really require much talent to make anymore, so I don't know whether that counts or not.

I'm a singing percussionist. I play "stand-up." congas, world-beat, cocktail drum, snare, cymbals and toys combination, and have played with "the catholic all-stars (my term, not theirs)" when they've been through town. (I'm anglican, incidentally) I'm learning the keyboards and can play chords on xylophone. it's tricky though, and not nearly as intuitive as I'd hoped it would be. found a 2-1/2 octave toy piano in a consignment shop that proves helpful anyway. but that item's not a (real) musical instrument. glad I read your thread.

As long as it produces notes and you actually have to work at it, i consider it 'real'. 'Unreal' refers to things the like a triangle or the comb. Know what i mean?

I play piano and guitar.

That does not mean that I know how to play these instruments. But I play them anyway.

And I also play drums, when I can mooch off my drum-playing friend's drumset.

well, yes, and thanks for the encouragement. back in college when all I had was the snare, I was hanging with some older kids, one of which was a percussion major. I was explaining the Thompson Twins music and commenting that they all played percussion, and weren't really musicians. That comment did not go over very well.

since then my seriousness' tempo has increased. even "music directed" a renewal weekend (a first 'round here for non guitar player/keyboard player) a few years ago. learning hard rules that make sense, musically (chord structure, for example) has really opened my eyes. I don't practice like I should but, you know.

I do collect musical toys, antique and new. One day I'd like to get a combo together on those toys and play "real" music. Now that I'm full of bluster, I'd argue that a triangle can be played with musicality wink.gif and finger cymbals, them's tricksey.

I play several instruments and was in a band for a while. I'd link you to some of our stuff but since mp3 was bought out and they deleted their archives I'm afraid that isn't possible.

Do you really believe that percussionists aren't musical? They may not be tonal (well, they ARE, but they usually aren't used for melody), but rhythm - time, rather - is..... huh? what? did i misinterpret? oh.. sorry.

That band was called "Reverser", was it not? If yes, then I think I may have heard a couple of songs.

meaning; I've gotten serious about playing percussion.

Yes, percussion is played by musicians. I remind my fellow(musician)s this at every opportunity as these days I am similarly berated. laugh.gif I'm very happy to say that I've grown as a musician, and have great respect for those who can play without simply banging away.

and my taste in bands has improved as well. wink.gif

TT were a good new wave band and had a number of hits in the '80s. I'd just rather not be identified with TT being my favorite band. simply citing an example of sticking my foot in my mouth 20 years ago that's all.

and yes, percussionists are tonal. that's why I got the xylophone. (technically, the piano is a percussion instrument. but not the harpsichord because it's strings are plucked, not hammered)

one last thing... back when I got the snare an influence of mine told me "don't call yourself a drummer, anybody can be a drummer. if you can play the drums AND a triangle, consider yourself a percussionist." If he'd have said "musician" that would have saved me some embarassment.

Note to self: Continue to refer to self as "percussionist".

I can play the piano fairly well, although my repatoiesedgkejgee... erm, my song list is rather low. I have the skill, but just don't have the motivation to learn songs most of the time. I usually just get pissed off and quit trying to learn. However, I can play a mean piano solo of the Zelda 2 Temple Music, and am working towards the Mario theme.

Err, it's not a piano, pianos are for wimps. I play the keyboard. Yeah, that's it.

I'm also very slowly trying to learn guitar on my spiffy new lefty guitar. However, I don't really know what the fuck I'm doing aside from the 3 chords my dad has tought me, and my fingers are not very good at moving independantly except for up and down. I don't know if anybody says this or not, but playing the piano doesn't help limber up your fingers for guitar work. And I have something against using picks. I just don't like them for some reason.

That is all.

Yea, that's pretty much my problem with learning songs - i could, but usually i just learn the bitsi like, so if someone asked to play them a certain song that i knew, i might be able to do one part of it, leaving audiences unsatisfied. I rarely take the time to figure out songs on my own (altho i have tabbed some FFT songs; anyone wanna test them out?). But really, i can't play very hard songs... with fast tempos and a million notes played after the 12th fret...

I often wonder if i AM in fact better than an average human at playing guitar. i haven't seen a complete beginner pick up a guitar in a while, so... i forget what it's like! uh.... huh

I was hopting to make the transition into piano soon, but... $$$.

That'sall i gotta say. rolleyes.gif
