As long as it produces notes and you actually have to work at it, i consider it 'real'. 'Unreal' refers to things the like a triangle or the comb. Know what i mean?
I was explaining the Thompson Twins music and commenting that they all played percussion, and weren't really musicians. That comment did not go over very well.
since then my seriousness' tempo has increased.
meaning; I've gotten serious about playing percussion.
Yes, percussion is played by musicians. I remind my fellow(musician)s this at every opportunity as these days I am similarly berated.

I'm very happy to say that I've grown as a musician, and have great respect for those who can play without simply banging away.
and my taste in bands has improved as well.
TT were a good new wave band and had a number of hits in the '80s. I'd just rather not be identified with TT being my favorite band. simply citing an example of sticking my foot in my mouth 20 years ago that's all.
and yes, percussionists are tonal. that's why I got the xylophone. (technically, the piano is a percussion instrument. but not the harpsichord because it's strings are plucked, not hammered)
one last thing... back when I got the snare an influence of mine told me "don't call yourself a drummer, anybody can be a drummer. if you can play the drums AND a triangle, consider yourself a percussionist." If he'd have said "musician" that would have saved me some embarassment.
