Wedge: I can address only your third question: there's supposed to be a less ambiguous ending in the Special Edition version, which, I guess, explains Chzo's motivations as well. Don't have a credit card yet, so I'll have to wait for that. What we think might be close to the truth is that he wanted an infinite source of pain by getting John DeFoe into his own universe, as he sees time as one. So he used some kind of loophole and fucked over a bunch of stupid cultists in the process. I like to think DaCabe died in the explosion and what went over has nothing more to do with him.
Also, we've got this spoiler thread which has some interesting theories.

I think that theory is a paradoxon. How can Chzo take John DeFoe into his own universe? Only with his destruction the bridge can be opened between the worlds, and if he is destroyed, Chzo can't take him anywhere. And he didn't plan a scheme, so big, to get an eternal pain source. His not an animal, who only thinks about eating.
What I can piece together from the forums, and the game's story is that the people in the Magickal Realm was afraid of Chzo. They're threatened his existence, because maybe there are ways to finish him off. So he deceided to make a gurad.
He couldn't do anything in the Magickal Realm, because he didn't wanted the people to be suspicious. So he needed a connection to the Technological Realm - Cabadath.
He tormented the druid and when his mind was broken, he was a blind slave. Chzo let him to punish those who tormented his soul tree. He saw the journey of the tree's wood, and where is it going to be - DeFoe Manor.
He finally found John DeFoe who was tormented from his childhood. He was killed by the idol of Cabadath so he become the bridgekeeper.
Chzo only had left alive Samantha, Janin, and Canning, because they're needed to purify Dacabe through pain.
John DeFoe was completely destroyed but his clothes were taken from the manifestating world into reality. I think they held the "memory" of the killings, like the objects in Trilby's Notes. Everyone who was killed by DeFoe, his/her blood was splattered on the apron and mask. That's the answer to the hallucination with the 7DAS box at the end of 6DAS - Dacabe saw what is going to happen with those who were killed by the assailant weilding the apron.
So Chzo had Dacabe, who's three aspects were utterly broken and the Welder's suit with the memory of the killings (and maybe magical power, and pain to feed on).
I think Dacabe was better than Cabadath, for Chzo, because he suffered much more in his life, and he didn't wanted it. He was also more courtly than Cabadath (he was arrogant). Alson Cabadath had a major weakness - the idol.
I think that clears out the picture a little, Trilby. Phew! G'night!

Also, doesn't anyone else feel bad about the poor final trilby clone, huddling in terror in the corner? i mean, he's going to be tortured for the rest of eternity, even if he is a clone, poor trilby.

I have a question.
Malcolm Somerset became an avatar of destiny, he was basically around to make sure time happed the way it is supposed to.
But think about it.
Time is time. Whatever happens is a part of it, and whatever doesn't happen isn't. No matter what happened, it would always be a part of time. Therefore, there is no reason to have a person keep the timestream in check, since whatever happened is what was supposed to happen, since it happened. Therefore, if the ending to 6DaS is what was supposed to happen, it would be able to happen without having someone interfere. And if it didn't happen, then the other thing is what was supposed to happen.
Basically, I'm saying that if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen.
So there doesn't seem to be a need to have someone make sure things should go how they are supposed to go, since whatever happens is what is supposed to happen. Malcom's character doesn't seem to need to exist, really.
Wow. Okay.

There are various competing theories about how it would work, assuming it is possible at all.
Things happening the way they did in 6DAS are possible if time doesn't progress in a linear way, if in some way it is all interconnected, and we can only perceive things along a linerish progression. As an aside, I think Chzo perceives things in such a non-linear way, so it may seem to be the case.

Wow. Okay.
Spoilers.
Like theorised on other forums, maybe Destiny is an entity like Chzo witch lives outside of time.
In 6DAS the Tall Man turned against Chzo and tried to kill Dacabe. Chzo lost his serveant so he couldn't interfere with the happenings in the game. That's why the Caretaker was needed, to make things happen as Destiny (and Chzo) wished. Because Cabadath and DeFoe had many opportunity to kill Dacabe but Malcolm always interfered.
I think Destiny and the timeline are two different things, the reason of the Caretaker's existence is not to make things happen as they supposed to be, but to interfere with the timeline and change it the way the Destiny wishes.
